In the United States, hand osteoarthritis is second in prevalence only to knee arthritis and thumb CMC OA is a common and disabling degenerative disease that affects up to 33 percent of women and 11 percent of men in their 50s and 60s. The thumb is critical to hand function with nearly all the basic activities of daily living requiring precision pinching and grasping. Loss of thumb function due to CMC OA causes a 40 to 50 percent impairment to the upper extremity, severely impacting a patient’s quality of life.

The SpeedSprial CMC System utilizes a pre-shaped, dense, strong and flexible allograft implant to treat thumb CMC joint pain and/or instability caused by OA. Features and Benefits include:

  • Maintains the structural column of the thumb joint
  • Avoids thumb shortening
  • Minimizes the risk of metacarpal subsidence that is common to other autograft only procedures
  • Provides excellent pinch and grip strength for the patient (power pinch strength)

Furthermore, the SpeedSpiral is sterile, decellularized and freeze-dried (no rehydration necessary) and is designed to augment the FCR tendon and/or the capsuloligamentous structures at the thumb while also minimizing operating room time.

Currently, the standard procedure is to remove the trapezium bone leaving a space in the joint resulting in the loss of pinch strength and a chance for the bones to collapse. Additionally, other existing treatments such as Suspensionplasty techniques and metal implants have been shown to leave patients weak in the thumb with reduced pinch strength.

Arthrosurface is the first to replace the arthritic trapezium bone with a structurally sound, stable, load-bearing graft implant that will not allow the thumb CMC joint to collapse. The implant will incorporate into the body and allows for reduced pain and increased pinch and grip strength (power pinch strength). The SpeedSpiral is also a great option for a failed LRTI.

Patient Benefits:

  • Improved pinch and grip strength (power pinch strength)
  • Pain relief
  • Ability to snap your fingers
  • Shorter recovery
  • Less restrictions
  • Quick procedure / Shorter hospital Stay
