It’s that time of year again! Fall has begun and winter is quickly approaching (with only 12 weeks until Christmas).
In the US, Flu season usually peaks between December & February. The flu can be much more dangerous for the elderly, young, and those with underlying health conditions such as arthritis. The best way to avoid the flu is to get a Flu Vaccine each & every year. With that being said, why is it so important for someone with arthritis to get the vaccine? Because, those people with autoimmune disorders and inflammatory conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, lupus and osteoarthritis, have a higher risk of respiratory infections and flu-related complications such as pneumonia.
Arthritis and many of the medications used to treat arthritis weaken the immune system which controls how well you can fight off infections and viruses. Your best bet is to get the Flu Shot!
Medical Professionals also advise against getting the flu shot in the nasal spray form as that contains a live, yet inactive virus which can be risky to those who have a weakened immune system.
But, just because you opted for a Flu Shot this year, doesn’t mean you won’t get a cold or the flu. Make sure to wash your hands frequently and correctly, avoid touching your eyes, mouth or nose, avoid close contact with sick people and finally, cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze.
